Three years after the Dan Brown novel "The Da Vinci Code" appeared as a film which took a staggering $760 million, another of his books receives the large screen treatment. Although Brown wrote "Angels & Demons" first, the film version represents this story, which is sympathetic to the Catholic Church, as following "The Da Vinci Code" which was seen as hostile to the Church. Whatever the difference in stance towards Catholicism, Brown's work is always terribly formulaic: a twisting plot set over a matter of hours, lots of symbols and signs, considerable running, much desecration of the flesh, the counterbalancing of religion and science, minimal characterisation, and changing perception of key characters. This time it's all cardinals, cathedrals, crypts and catacombs plus a camerlengo scattered over central Rome and the Vatican.
Again Tom Hanks as the Harvard symbologist does his best with a wooden script (but a better haircut) - at least "Angels & Demons" is less wordy than "The Da Vinci Code". Again there is only one female character - this time Italian physicist Vittoria Vetra (Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer). Scottish Ewan McGregor (who struggles to affect a Northern Irish accent), German Armin Mueller-Stahl and Swedish Stellan Skarsgård each play Vatican officials who may be an angel or a demon. It's hard to work out which is the greatest threat: the Illuminati, an anti-matter bomb or the implausibilities of the plot. Papal bull or curate's egg? - you decide. It's a miracle that it works at all, but if you have faith, I confess that it's really quite an entertaining piece of hokum.

The Boat That Rocked (2009) Full Movie HD
I watch a lot of films but have never felt as compelled to review one on IMDb as this. If only because most of the reviews already out there either contain groundless slatings or are badly written.
Yes the soundtrack is amazing and will be a huge success. With artists such as The Kinks, The Turtles, Procol Harum, Cat Stevens, The Hollies, The Who, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and Cream it'd be almost impossible not to produce a top quality double-CD album. The right music also seems to come on at all the right times complimenting the movie perfectly.
But I've heard people say the acting was weak and wooden, which is completely unfounded. Admitedly there is a fairly large cast which does mean the plot can never focus on one character for too long and perhaps, in theory, one or two of them should have been cut out. However in practise I can't think of a single character that I wouldn't have missed.
It's only very loosely based on fact but does still manage to educate in the sense that many young people wouldn't even have been aware of the existence of pirate radio before watching. It's a refreshingly original film too, unlike anything out at the moment.
The humour can be childish at times (rude character names, a falling-out-of-bed joke) but only adds to the "this is meant to be fun" tone of the movie and is easily overlooked should it be a pet hate of yours.
Don't let the critics put you off going to see The Boat That Rocked - if you don't have kids and don't live near a 3D Cinema this will be the best film out in theatres and available to see until it stops showing. Certainly worth your time and money.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2009) Full Movie HD
Since the post-modern shenanigans of Scream have now passed as much into the realm of retrodom as the films that Scream itself parodied, the slasher genre has undergone a very bizarre 'return to roots' in which the conventions of the genre subverted by Scream seem no longer to be an object of satire, instead these age-old cheesy-as-hell clichés have found themselves again worshipped to an almost religious degree by a new audience unaware of concepts such as self-awareness or irony. With this in mind, the genre is in what could be called 'a new dark age'. Thank heavens then for All The Boys Love Mandy Lane.
This latest genre entry is not ground-breaking in the way that Scream was. It lacks that films overt subversiveness and intertextuality, as well as its well timed humour. However Mandy Lane plays with enough conventions to be interesting. Chiefly, the film blends together two narratives, one is a coming-of-age tale of self discovery, the other is a typical nasty slasher film. The plot, like the best of these films, is so simple you could write it on the back of a postage stamp. Mandy Lane is the girl every guy wants to bed, and over the course of a weekend getaway it seems many a hormonally addled young squire has this in mind, unfortunately one person is so obsessed with her that they're killing anyone who isn't worthy of her.
Such a premise is hardly ingenious, but the way the film uses it is. Whilst all the typical teen stereotypes emerge, the films concept is used to examine them in more than the usual level of detail. Witness the jock who's actually an insecure wimp intimidated by societal demands to be the alpha male, the slut who's so obsessed with her looks she's self consciously anorexic, and the wise cracking black guy who actually doesn't wise crack at all. The killer is revealed well before the end and the motivation of the killer is scarily realistic, almost empathetic, in a world of everyday high school shootings. Whilst many of the characters in the film aren't exactly likable, they are empathetic, and for this reason the film contains an emotional weight other slashers do not.
There's a twist at the end, which most people will see coming, but like any good twist the focus isn't on what it reveals but what it doesn't reveal. Indeed, the twist only poses more questions, particularly regarding the moral compass of the film which is, at best, ambiguous. Generally speaking, the film isn't particularly gory, relying more on suspense and suggestion. I found the film's level of realism, some would argue nihilism, refreshing in an era of popcorn orientated teen fodder. It won't convert slasher haters, or those devoted to living in the 'good old days', but it will intrigue those who want to see a slasher in which teenagers actually exist as teenagers, as opposed to merely victims solely there to get naked then die. Also worthy of note is the wonderful cinematography and use of music, which is truly outstanding. Ultimately, Mandy Lane is a less than by-numbers slasher flick, with a lot going on under the surface (which will go over a lot of people's heads). Like the best horror films, it made me think. That is no bad thing.

(500) Days of Summer (2009) Full Movie Divx
This is the story of boy meets girl, but it is not a love story that will unfurl. Instead a story about loves reactions, caused by two peoples juvenile actions
A little rhyme I wrote in honor of this years funniest and most delightful film. In January 2009 I was able to attend the Sundance Film Festival where I viewed a number of superb movies but none so genius as this one. Unable to buy or book any tickets for the original showings I sadly set my thoughts on other films, till the last day. I had changed plans and went to the ticket office to exchange one movie ticket for another. It was then that I discovered they planned to screen another showing of 500 Days of Summer, due to such immense popularity. Immediately getting a ticket I found myself in the theater a few hours after awaiting with batted breath. I looked around me and watched as Joseph Gorden Levitt took a seat in the row behind, smiling and shaking hands with a number of fans. Although I too was a great fan I couldn't bring myself to go over there, instead I stayed in my seat and the movie was started.
An hour and a half later, I was standing up and applauding for all I was worth. In fact the whole cinema was, with every single audience member whistling, clapping and laughing at the brilliance of it all. Then Joseph Gorden Levitt, (the only cast member of the film who showed) got up on stage and started answering questions. Bubbling with enthusiasm he jumped around, laughing and yelling and keeping the lot of us entertained. He answered the straight questions with straight answers and the silly questions with straight out of hell silly answers. And at the end ran up and down the stage filming us all with a camcorder, saying he'd remember the day forever, I sure do.
Then he went back to his seat and as everyone exited the cinema I swallowed my pride, walked up and shook his hand saying, "Amazing performance, you're an inspiration." Then it was over, I found myself being shuffled with the crowd out of the theater and into the cold outside. But even though I was in a sweatshirt, I couldn't feel a thing, being instead caught up in the entertainment and thoughts of a vibrant funny film.
A film that scores high in all the boxes and one I will certainly see again.

The Hurt Locker (2009) Full Movie HD
OK, the action aspect has been described in other comments. No need to repeat that it's extremely well done, and that it's powerful. The first 30' of the films are so gripping you feel you're going to die with the artificer.
I'd like to say something about other aspects of The Hurt Locker. First, the fact that, though only focusing on the 3 main characters, the members of the EOD team, Bigelow manages to put Iraqi people in the picture. Not trying to tell the story from their point of view, which would be very difficult and might easily sound false. But showing how the war in Iraq is fought among common people who are desperately trying to live a normal life. This creates a situation of deadly uncertainty, which is well caught in the movie, and also moral responsibility. The final scene, where the artificer talks to the human bomb, is not just gripping and suspenseful: it's also a sort of moral allegory. Can the US troops there defuse the bomb, which is a metaphor of a country totally out of control? Well, the ending of the scene probably tells you what's Bigelow opinion on it.
But let's go to the little lower layer. If danger is an addictive drug (that's what the film tells you right from the start), it should be said that William James is not the only addict in the film. He tries to get back home and live a normal life again with his wife and child. He can't. He gets back to Iraq. Is this only James' problem? Or are the US on the whole addicted to war, violence, danger? I think the ending tells another story, not just that of the protagonist. The man who cannot stop gambling on his ability to deactivate bombs may be an image of a country which cannot stop gambling on its ability to win wars (or to persuade itself it is winning the wars it's started).
All in all, a deeper film than it may seem at a first viewing.

Next Day Air (2009) Full Movie HD
In watching this Summit film, I couldn't help but notice the similarities in this movie to Lost In Transit (September 2008). Next Day Air is basically about some black employees at a shipping company who misbehave. LIT is about a black "supervisor" who runs a shipping company and misbehave he does! At one point they open a package and find a gold watch, which they keep. In Next Day Air they find drugs inside a package. In LIT one employee is misled into believing by a "DEA agent" that weed is inside a package. LIT was released only 7 months earlier than Next Day Air. After seeing these two films lets hope this isn't what really goes on behind closed doors at companies like... well you know who.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) Full Movie HD
Fashion photographer Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) is a typical ladies' man and playboy - the kind of jerk who breaks up with three women simultaneously via a computer conference call. And yet the girls love him, clamoring to be the next one-night-stand. He's invited by his brother Paul (Breckin Meyer) to Paul and Sandra's (Lacey Chabert) wedding, against the advice of Connor's childhood sweetheart Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner) and everyone familiar with his scandalous ways. She once had hopes for him, but Connor didn't want his meaningless but exciting short-lived sexual relationships to be hindered by feelings. He's like the Tin Man - born without a heart.
Mead owes his attitude primarily to his mentor Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), a now deceased lady-killer legend who notoriously hosted mind-numbing, clothing optional, week-long orgies in his house - he also invented the word "MILF." Through the careful tutoring of Wayne, Connor has grown up to believe love is a magical comfort food for the weak and uneducated - forever condemning a fruitful relationship with Jenny. But his theories on love are destined to change when the ghost of Uncle Wayne returns to warn him of his wicked ways, along with visits by the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Present and Future.
The conclusion may be terribly contrived, and the plot completely predictable in its unwavering course of correcting a tarnished soul and building Connor to be contemptible in his efforts to paint love as a corrupt and hateful institution (he mean-spiritedly claims that the power of a relationship lies within whoever cares less), but the film isn't afraid to poke fun at itself. At times it's almost self-aware that it's a movie, taking themes less than seriously, and several of the purely comedic performances, including Emma Stone as the Ghost of Girlfriends Past and Douglas as womanizer Wayne, are hilariously delightful. It may be a Matthew McConaughey movie, but it's a little more open to general audiences than his usual women-only mindless mush.

Dead Snow (2009) Full Movie HQ
What starts out as a fun in the snow and sun, snowball fights, fooling around with a motor sled and a Stiga, soon turns into a gory zombie onslaught as the kids find a box full of Nazi gold that definitively doesn't belong to them.
The unique setting in the genre gives an unforgettable flavor to the easily one of the greatest zombie films that I've seen in ages. Director Tommy Wirkola breaks most of the deeply-rooted Zombie traditions with Norwegian rock and metal banging in the background - the Zombies run, think and even talk (well, just one word). Död Snö manages to do what many have tried and almost as many have failed while trying: it's entertaining, scary, agonizing, bloody, fun and kicks in like a 12-pack of beer. The story is well written, actors do awesome an job and director Wirkola's comedy timing is excellent, as is his ability to build up the horror. He seems to know exactly how scary place an outhouse can be when it's -20 degrees outside, in the middle of the night. Added with a Nazi zombie roaming outside, it's definitively not a place you'd like to be with your pants around your ankles.
Död Snö is a wonderful piece of film that isn't ashamed of it's roots and language, and stands proudly as one of the great examples of Norther horror wave that's going strong right now (with Sauna and Let the Right One In).
Moon (2009) Full Movie HD
You don't really stumble upon many riveting, independent, sci-fi films that look beautiful(let alone don't contain aliens and space magic) and capture major emotional themes successfully. Moon accomplishes this, and with very little CGI at that.
Sam Bell is an astronaut working for a corporation on the far side of the moon. His job? Maintaining a lunar facility and the automated machines which are harvesting the moon's surface for Helium 3. The harvested material is then sent back to Earth to use as energy.
Sam is on the very last leg of a three year contract and is quite anxious to return to his wife and daughter. Barring any incidents, Sam will be able to leave his solitude. But something does go wrong.
That said, tremendous acting by Sam Rockwell carries this film - mainly because he is basically the only person in the movie. I'm not talking about Cast Away meets the moon… This film explores loneliness much deeper than that, and with much more emotion as well. Luckily for us there are no pieces of sports equipment on which the lead dotes, but instead we're blessed with a monotonous talking robot(voiced by Kevin Spacey) reminiscent of Hal from 2001 notoriety.
I advise that people go see this film, not only to support Duncan, the director, and Sam, but also to explore to possibilities of space and the humanity of loneliness.
Don't go in expecting to find what I have discussed, but go in expecting to find something inside yourself.

The Brothers Bloom (2009) Full Movie HD
The Brothers Bloom unwinds the story of two confidence men, an Asian sidekick and their rich but isolated mark. The Brothers Bloom is a charming off kilter dramedy about love.
Bloom (Adrien Brody) and his brother Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) work as confidence men with their explosive sidekick Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi). Tired of the life, Bloom tells his brother he's done. His brother talks him into one final con against Penelope Stamp (Rachael Weisz.) Penelope is a rich, eccentric shut-in who has yet to live. They take advantage of her loneliness in a scam meant to satisfy her need for adventure.
Rian Johnson sees the world in The Brothers Bloom the way an archer fish sees bugs. The archer fish hunts bugs above the water's surface by shooting water at the bug from below the water line. When looking up from underneath everything looks like it is one place but actually is in a slightly different place because water refracts light, changing the view for the submerged. The archer fish has to see things slightly cockeyed in order to get the archery right. Rian Johnson took a slightly crooked approach to get the cinematic physics just right.
Penelope Stamp is the Robin Hood of cinematic archer fish. Everything about her life, her development, and her emotions are delightfully off balance. She isn't brilliant but she had dedicated herself to learning how to do many strange and obscure things. It wasn't good enough for Rian Johnson to make Penelope interested in pinhole cameras (a camera made by putting a piece of photo paper in a light-tight container and poking a pin hole in it to expose the paper), it had to be a pin hole camera made of a watermelon. Johnson made sure Penelope is beautiful, but by casting Weisz, made her an interesting beauty.
It isn't just the nature of the characters, but also how they talk. Johnson commits so fully to this strange-ified world, that dialogue that would warrant a call to the loony bin in real life, seems natural in the world created in The Brothers Bloom.
The downside to making the characters fit so naturally in their world is jokes or emotions that might resonate deeply in our world sometimes fall a little flat in The Brothers Bloom. There are no gut busting jokes but occasionally the audience finds themselves chuckling. Cheeks will not be soaked in tears, but occasionally a frog may find way into the throats of the viewers.
The Brothers Bloom is an endearing quirk-filled film sure to whisk the audience away on a flying crime filled love carpet.
Star Trek (2009) Full Movie DvDrip
I was a fairly big Trekkie in my youth, but in the last 10 years only really kept up with it by watching a few new episodes here and there and seeing the big screen outings (OK, I admit that I have all 10 films on special edition DVD - £47 was a bargain!) - but Abrams' vision here has me thinking the new franchise will be even better than what has come before.
What made this film special for me was not the story (remarkably good, bearing in mind that, like the first film in any new franchise, it's backbone was character development). What made this film for me was the....photography? Can you even call CGI photography? Well, either way, this film was a visual feast. The way that scale was conveyed was breath-taking. I'm not sure whether I read this somewhere or if I can take credit for it myself, but the difference came in the way that Abrams shoved aside the traditional Star Trek view of Enterprise as a lumbering naval ship and took a more Star Wars-esquire dogfight approach. This has set a high standard for a new era of Star Trek that I hope will spawn at least a couple more films.
It's not that I wasn't impressed with the character development, the acting, the script or the story - it's just that this film looked so gorgeous that I haven't been able to think of anything else since I saw it last night! But sufficed to say, this was overall an excellent feature. It might not quite deserve a 100% rating, but it's worth more than 90% in my eyes - so, by rounding up, it gets 10/10 from me! Final warning: see this film in the cinema. Do not wait for it to come out on DVD. It. Will. Not. Do. It. Justice.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) Full Movie HQ
Two elements make this movie really work. Liev Schreiber - a very underestimated actor - does a great job as Wolverine's brother Victor/Sabretooth. It's their love/hate relationship that is the main subject in this story and that really keeps it interesting. In the first minutes of the movie this is well established. The opening credits are really beautiful.
Second: the story. I really love the story. It has romance, betrayal, vengeance, action, a touch of immortality... All the good elements are there in the right doses.
Yes, I really love this movie. I hope to see more of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the future, because there are a lot more adventures he can and should have. Maybe director Gavin Hood can repair some of the damage that Brett Ratner did with a X-Men 3. Because an X-Men 4 - with hopefully Josh Halloway as Gambit - would be a great spectacle indeed.
There's only one big thing that really puzzled me. So the Liev Schreiber character is actually the same Sabretooth we see in X-Men 1? Because the two characters really don't seem the same in the two movies. Everything they have "experienced together in the past" (in the prequel) seems forgotten in X-Men 1 (when they only fight each other).
Anyway, go see this!

Crank: High Voltage (2009) Full Movie Divx
Let me start off by defending my rating of this title. Really it's hard for me to rate a movie like this, it is directed right at me and my type of people. I can't help it that I like a movie like this, it's just the way it is.
Really this movie is a grind house movie in an era where grind house movies don't exist. It has everything that is unacceptable as entertainment in other movies...and yet you can't stop watching. It's for the most part, balls to the walls, insanity. It doesn't make sense. The reason I don't' mind...is that it's not trying to. It knows it's stupid and crazy. And it loves it. It's not trying to impress you. This is a movie that really took control of itself. Typically you'll have a movie with an a-b formula...this is a a-z formula with complete insanity and randomness filling in the interval. You know where the movie is going as soon as you start watching it, it's the ride that excites and keeps you watching.
In short, this movie has violence, action, nudity, homosexuality, disabilities, public indecency and racism. And I have to admit, I liked it.
The one problem I had with this movie is it started so crazy and hilarious that it kind of peaked in the middle. It was just so much that the rest didn't surprise you anymore. I still found it very enjoyable though, and would definitely add it to my collection.
Also I know this review sucks, but this movie is hard to give a serious review to. If you like movies that play out like a GTA video game mixed with a violent Japanese film...then watch it. Just have fun with it.

Fast and Furious (2009)Full Movie Divx
Director Justin Lin has a distinctive thrilling visual style. The opening sequence of his "Fast & Furious" is an amazing adrenaline rush. Dom (Vin Diesel) and his girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) highjack a cargo truck careening down a ravine in the Dominican Republic. Dom, unflinchingly guts out a crazy maneuver that saves himself and Letty from fiery death. This establishes the tone for "Fast & Furious": extreme and full throttle. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker reunite in this satisfying re-energizing of the franchise. Justin Lin generates spectacular eye candy: strong heroes, slick cars, gorgeous women, intense action, and some to the wildest high speed sequences. The soundtrack is pretty hot, too.
What is interesting: this time around Chris Morgan's story is about vengeance. What works is the dynamic chemistry of Diesel and Walker. Diesel is not breaking new territory. He plays to his strength as the powerful dark hero, who follows a code of honor. Paul Walker is a pleasant surprise. He infuses a force and charisma in Brian O'Connor. Walker has become a stronger actor since "The Fast and the Furious". This time around he and Diesel are true screen partners. Theirs is a partnership of friction, brotherhood, and ultimately of respect which grounds "Fast and Furious". In one scene former girlfriend and Dom's younger sister Mia (beautiful and strong Jordana Brewster) asks why Brian (Walker) let Dom (Diesel) go 8 years ago. Brian tells Mia it's because Dom taught him: "Nothing matters unless you have a code." Brian also confesses that he is still trying to find his own code.
After Dom's stunt in the Dominican Republic, the authorities are closing in on him. To protect the love of his life, Letty (Rodriguez), he leaves her the money and disappears. However, while in exile Mia breaks the news to Dom that Letty has been murdered back home in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, FBI Agent O'Connor is hunting down the mysterious drug cartel kingpin Baraga, who is able to move large shipments of narcotics across the border with his elite drivers. Brian is also tracking down Dom, who he knows will come back to Los Angeles because of the personal tragedy.
Dom returns home just flying under the FBI radar. He has Mia show him where Letty was killed in a car crash. Dom discerns that Letty was brutally murdered, and that the murderer left a distinguishing signature. Mia pleads with Dom to let this go: this will not bring Letty back. Dom sullenly declared, "It's already too late." He intends to kill Letty's murderer and find the man ultimately responsible. All paths lead to the mysterious Baraga. So Dom and Brian's destinies collide as they compete as drivers for Baraga's right hand Campos (slick John Ortiz). That race too, is another spectacular mind blowing ride through the trafficked streets of Los Angeles.
Okay much of "Fast and Furious" is predictable and formulae; however, Justin Lin does so with amazing style and verve. He keeps the action crisp and vibrant. Diesel and Walker are solid heroes to cheer for. Bad guys Campos (Ortiz) and Fenix (ruthless Laz Alonzo) are completely despicable. Jordana Brewster is the right blend of tough and smart as Mia. Surprisingly good is beautiful and enigmatic Gal Gadot as Gisele, who has a soft spot for Dom. "Fast and Furious" is a high speed vengeance tale with charismatic heroes Diesel and Walker. Director Lin keeps our attention with hot cars, hot women, and spectacular stunts. "Fast and Furious" is not going win any awards, but it is thoroughly entertaining.

Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009) Full Movie HQ
Okay, I'll admit that I'm a tough one to please, and that after seeing the TV show, I wasn't expecting anything grand. But I just had to write a review. Just watching that awful excuse for a children's film made me feel I was losing IQ points.
First of all, we all know what this movie was. It was an attempt to kill off (not literally) the Hannah Montana character because the "beautiful and talented" Miley wants to "spread her wings" and be able to work on bigger projects. This movie is supposed to be the final note on the subject, so Miley can leave her Hannah persona behind for good, while making a sh*tload of money from seven-year-old girls.
For a teen idol, or rather, a seven-year-old's idol, Miley is bizarrely untalented. Her voice is fine for the audience she targets. Severely edited, I don't believe the girl can sing a note, but good enough for a seven-year-old's indiscriminate ears. Honestly, they'll fall in love with anything as long as it says "Disney" on it.
Miley's "acting ability" is the biggest concern. The utter lack of character development in this show (and I view the movie as just an extension of the series) is astounding. Miley's acting consists only of shouting, jerky arm movements, forced laughs, and unpleasant facial expressions. Her father is equally talented. His performance consists of, well, a monotone voice and painful "hick" jokes. No arm movement whatsoever.
The plot of the movie is hardly worth mentioning, it's so contrived. Girl has two choose between the life of a popstar and a regular girl, while "finding herself". Fortunately, there's no laugh track. I was appalled that this is top at the Box Office, when it's so obviously awful. Children's entertainment has fallen so much in recent years. Admittedly, I'm only nineteen, but I've seen a huge change in the quality. Disney has become a joke, aside from Pixar. They're still cool. :D.
The enduring popularity of non-talents like Miley among young children makes it difficult for real child actors to get noticed. If they aren't Disney, then they are lost in the shuffle. I find this strange. For instance, I recently saw an unusually skillful performance by the young boy cast in "Knowing". That kid really has talent, and was able to portray complex emotions in a way very uncommon in Hollywood. I don't know his name, and I assume most people don't. But you can bet we all know Miley Cyrus' name Compared to the brilliant performances given by child actors of the past, such as River Phoenix and Brad Renfro, today's top teen idols are shameful. I can at least find comfort in knowing that once this is over, Miley will hop on the "Lindsay Lohan" train and disappear from the public eye. She doesn't have the ability to make it in real movies, or the voice to make it with older people. But honestly, that girl is so obnoxious. I hope she gets out of the spotlight and stays there, where she belongs.

State of Play (2009) Full Movie DvDrip
Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is helping with the government investigation of a shady military-based company when he receives word that his mistress has committed suicide. Visually distraught, he leaves a hearing in tears and sets off a media circus. Seasoned reporter Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe) was his roommate in college, and the two have remained friends. In a bid to quash the political blogging of junior reporter Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), McAffrey sets out to find the truth about the story.
State of Play sets itself up early on to be a cookie-cutter, predictable thriller. But as the film progresses, it rather quickly becomes the twisty and conniving thriller it needs to be. Despite being heavily dialogue driven, the film is an intense ride that will keep people on edge throughout. Some scenes are downright terrifying in their amped up suspense and political intrigue. This film really set out to be tense, and succeeds wonderfully. It knows just what punches to pull, and when to pull them.
The script, written by political scribes Matthew Michael Carnahan, Tony Gilory and Billy Ray, is insight and intriguing. It could have easily been made boring and inundated with rehashed politicalisms (like all of their last films), but this film revels in how interesting it becomes. It has laughs strung throughout (a genuine surprise), and lacks the nerve to become loaded to the brim with facts and innuendos. Instead, it expertly weaves between scenes, amping up the intensity of some scenes, and downplaying others.
But this is mainly due to the incredible performances by the cast. Crowe (who I usually loathe) and Affleck are simply outstanding in their roles. Age issues aside, both play their character with finesse and charisma. Affleck looks and acts like a confused wet-behind-the-ears, gunning-for-higher-office political pawn from beginning to end. Some of the reactions on his face are downright devastating in how excellently they are conveyed. And this is a guy critics once said could not act. Coupled with one-two shot of acting in Hollywoodland and directing Gone Baby Gone, we may be seeing a renewed resonance and importance for the Oscar-winner. Crowe on the other hand, delivers his strongest performance in years. While he has been downplayed and underused in his last few films, he carries this film. He is stubborn and vaguely likable, but he makes his character work for all of his idiosyncrasies and ethically-questionable tactics. He makes a seasoned journalist look like an amateur.
McAdams, all but a ghost recently, holds her own against the two heavy-hitters and delivers a performance that is both inspired and emotional. It gives her a lot of room to act, and she delivers in every instance. The rest of the cast is a bit mixed however, as so little of them is given that much to do. Harry Lennix, Robin Wright Penn, Jeff Daniels, the horrifying Michael Berresse and especially Jason Bateman, all deliver noteworthy performances, but never get to really shine in them. They all have their traits and motivations, but get little screen time to truly express them. They each are developed quite strongly, but they lack the movement afforded to Crowe, Affleck and McAdams. I simply loved Helen Mirren's scenery-gauging editor and all of her subtleties. But she too, is downplayed to the point of almost barely being in the film.
Despite its intensity, the film is bogged down by its dialogue-heavy scenes and consistent character additions. It is easy to keep track of everyone, but so many people are introduced that the film loses its focus on more than one occasion. It makes for a few scenes that are merely filler between the scenes of useful heavy acting. It just feels so tiring. I understand now how daunting a task it must have been to convert six hours of British television into a 127-minute film, but there are scenes that are just too easy to not have been cut out (some entire mildly useful subplots may have helped). Adding characters in makes sense for a story about two journalists frantically searching to lift the lid on a story, but there needs to be more emphasis on what was needed and not needed. A brilliant montage in the middle of the film goes almost entirely to waste because the filmmakers lack the knowledge of what should be cut. Limiting the preposterous and silly climax could have also done wonders. The scenes that are left in the film (including the finale) are great, but they could have been stronger if they were as tightly wound as the film wants itself to be. A little less shaky hand camera movement could have also significantly benefited the film.
Even with its problems, it is clear from the on-set of the first shot in the bullpen at the Washington Globe that the filmmakers are going for a very keen sense of homage to All the President's Men. While the on-going and very professional relationship between McAffrey and Frye is very similar to Woodward and Bernstein, the fabric of journalistic integrity and researching are the core of State of Play. The film is loaded with allusions to the Oscar-winning film, and even mimics shots right out of the film. While it is obvious for anyone who has seen Men, this film's nods are done in such a delicate and unique way that they never become distracting or blatant. The film is its own, and does not ever feel like it is living in its big-brother's shadow. It is a fresh take on old-fashioned reporting in a very digital age, and frequently walks the tight line of old versus new.
State of Play looked interesting, and surprisingly delivers on almost every count. It is not a perfect film, but it is a solid example of great film-making. It wants to be more, but seems content at being a twisty and suspenseful modern thriller.

Monsters vs Aliens (2009) Full Movie Divx
Let's get this out of the way first: I'm not a huge fan of DreamWorks Animation. Usually consisting of nothing more than unfunny pop culture gags, I think the majority of their films are mediocre at best, with the only ones that I really enjoyed being the first Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. The trailers for Monsters vs. Aliens did get me interested, though, and the voice cast seemed pretty impressive. Even so, I was still fairly skeptical about how it would finally turn out. Now, having seen the film, I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised.
There isn't a whole lot in the way of story and character development, but suffice it to say, it serves its purpose. What makes Monsters vs. Aliens such an enjoyable film is how it works as a comedy. The pop culture references are still present, but I found them to be more clever and funny this time around, and in much smaller amounts. I was smiling through virtually the entire film, and had about 5 or 6 hard laugh-out-loud moments throughout. As expected, I was also very impressed by the voice cast in this movie. Hugh Laurie does a fantastic job as the voice of the sophisticated (though mildly insane) Dr. Cockroach, and most of the laughs are generated by Seth Rogen's performance as B.O.B.. Even Reese Witherspoon helps you feel some sympathy for her character near the beginning of the film, and Stephen Colbert does a surprisingly solid job as President Hathaway.
The 3D, while not used as effectively as it was in Coraline, is still one of the more impressive showcasings that I've seen, and that's largely due to the film's incredible action sequences. Seriously, this is some of the best action that I've seen in an animated film; as far as I'm concerned, it's right up there with that of The Incredibles.
Overall, I found Monsters vs. Aliens to be a surprisingly entertaining film, with clever and witty dialogue, as well as terrific action. I'm not usually in favor of sequels, but if they're able to keep it as balanced and charming, I would honestly like to see this become a successful, long-running franchise. Nice job, folks at DreamWorks Animation.

Earth (2009) Full Movie HQ
I loved the way EARTH is made. Its photography is unbelievable, editing it must have been an interesting challenge and Patrick Stewart's voice over is PERFECT. In addition its music and sound editing make watching EARTH a profound experience you don't want to miss. You really are on a journey to where you would probably never-ever end up by yourself.
And although, at first, I was quite surprised by the laughter of the audience as we see animals in their daily fight for survival, I could not help laughing myself sometimes. Nature simply seems too impressive to comprehend.
But, rather than the need to laugh, I left the cinema with a profound question:"Howcome 200 years of industrial revolution can destroy natural systems that have been here for thousands and thousands of years?"
With this question in mind, you'll understand how I felt somewhat bitter and powerless after seeing EARTH. I felt the immediate need to change the world, to help all these animals in their struggle, to undo the changes we have gone through the last centuries and to stop the global heating at once (all that not being a NGO activist at all!)...
So I immediately visited the website mentioned at the end of the film to see what I could do to save our -still- fantastic planet (and the polar bear) from its depressing fate...
I was a little disappointed to find no direct answers to my questions there. Yet it was very interesting to find out more about the film and the struggle its crew went through.
I hope that cutting on my energy-use will do. I don't know how else to shorten the distance polar bears have to swim to reach land before they drown or attack animals they cannot beat in their exhausted state...
An inspiring film it is, but I didn't leave the cinema feeling very happy.

The Soloist (2009) Full Movie DvDrip
First off, I should say that I am personally familiar with this story, having worked in downtown L.A. for the last 19 years and seeing Mr Ayers and his cello many a time around 3rd and Hill Sts. I've also read Lopez's columns in the Times for years and followed this one with interest and satisfaction. Making a film about a tale like this restores my belief in Hollywood beyond the mindless bunk it churns out year after year.
Downey Jr and Foxx play a newspaper columnist and homeless man who come together in a most unusual way. Downey is a newspaper columnist looking for something original and interesting to write about it. He finds it when he sees Foxx beautifully playing battered stringed instruments along 3rd street in downtown L.A. Foxx has been there for years but on this day grabs the eye of the columnist because the columnist himself is experiencing hardship and doubt related to his own position. He begins to write about this talented but troubled man who fills the stinky air around him with harmony. They become friends but keep in mind this is not fiction. The friendship hits many bumps that continue to this day. Nathaniel Ayers (Foxx's character) may be a brilliant, educated musician, but he suffers from bouts of schizophrenia that manifest at any time. Downey's character accepts this as it adds more intrigue to his columns. Then he accepts it on a personal level. Their friendship ultimately becomes real and meaningful. You sense that Downey's character needs the friendship even more than Foxx's homeless man does. In the end, Downey's Lopez can see the positive effect his work has brought to the plight of the homeless, yet he wonders personally how much better he has made Nathaniel...? His reflections make us think also.
Downey Jr and Foxx play their characters to near perfection and the film masterfully takes its time in developing the relationship between the two. Great to see director Joe Wright telling a contemporary tale just as effectively as he has in previous works. The film makes us wonder how many other Nathaniel Ayers are lurking out there on the streets? Life being what it is, of course we will never know. The beauty of the film is that is shows what can happen when just one Nathaniel Ayers is found after being lost for so many years. There's no sugarcoating; Ayers doesn't magically get better and rejoin mainstream society. Instead, the mainstream accepts him for what he is and what he offers and begins integrating him as best it can. This film will certainly pop up at award time next year.

Fighting (2009) Full Movie Divx
"Fighting" has one of the best fight scenes ever with world champion kick boxer Cung Le as Dragon Le, the Chinese triad fighter, and Channing Tatum's Shawn MacArthur. This fight is spectacular in its brutality and graphic realism—we can almost feel the blows. Le's Dragon is a devastating martial artist, lightening quick and powerful. Tatum's Shawn is the smart street fighter with amazing grappling and close in brawling skills. Fight coordinator Mike Gunther expertly merges classic martial arts and street fighting. Ultimately, fights are determined upon sheer will.
Like most of director and writer Dito Montiel's "Fighting", the movie is stark, uncompromising, and about force of will. Channing Tatum, a trained martial artist himself, is believable as Shawn, who prevails on sheer force of will. Tatum is strong, charismatic, and is going to be a big star. Dito and co-writer Robert Munic's story of the underground fight scene in New York has been done before, but their take is gritty with a distinct appeal. And like most fight movies, "Fighting" succumbs to "Rocky" formula. However, with Tatum and Terrance Howard as scam artist Harvey Boarden, this rites of passage and redemption tale works with its distinct charm. The story itself is far from perfect. The opening scene when we are first introduced to Shawn's fighter prowess has a goofy effect, in that we are aware of an eventual betrayal that the Shawn is not.
Despite all this "Fighting" works, because of the engaging Tatum. Tatum plays Shawn MacArthur, who gets by on the streets of New York selling counterfeit merchandise. After taking notice of his natural fighting skills, con artist Harvey Boarden (Howard) asks him if he would like to make $5000 in the underground fight circuit. Eventually, Shawn realizes that this is his only shot. Harvey introduces Shawn to fight organizer Mr. Anthony (darkly slick Anthony DeSando). Shawn surprises Anthony and his men as he wins his qualifying match. Shawn becomes a rising celebrity on the fight circuit. Shawn pursues beautiful single mom Zulay (captivating Zulay Henao), who is bartender at one of the night clubs. Life is looking up for Shawn: he is making money and getting the girl of his dreams.
Predictably Shawn's shrouded past soon catches up with him regarding his estranged wrestling coach father back in Birmingham, Alabama. Another person from his past recognizes him, champion mixed martial arts fighter Evan Hailey (brash and dangerous Brian White). Both have unfinished business with each other.
Eventually, it all comes down to a $100,000 fight that Harvey brokers for Shawn. Shawn realizes that he has been betrayed by those closest to him. And now Harvey asks him to do the unthinkable. Here Tatum is amazing in his vulnerability as his Shawn knows he is a tool, "You don't think I understand that I'm nothing. I'm nothing… I don't wanna lose." Tatum embodies Shawn honor and understated strength, as we cheer for his redemption. Howard is strong as Shawn's duplicitous partner. Really it is Channing Tatum's star turn that fuels and powers "Fighting". "Fighting" is surprisingly satisfying and worth a watch.

17 Again (2009) Full Movie HD
17 Again" has been done before in "Big", "13 Going On 30" and one of my favorite movies, "The Kid". That being said: I really liked "17 Again". This is a star vehicle for teen heart-throb Zac Efron. Okay, the movie opens cheesy with ripped Efron shooting baskets in 1989 as high school star point guard Mike O'Donnell, highly recruited by colleges. Efron also impresses in a dance number with the cheerleaders. It's a good kind of cheese.
In director Burr Steers and writer Jason Filardi's "17 Again" older Mike (sympathetic Matthew Perry) gets a chance to be 17 again with the assistance of spiritual guide Janitor (Brian Doye-Murray). Efron is really good here displaying charm, humor, and surprising depth and compassion. There is a scene where the young Mike (Efron) consoles his daughter Maggie (vulnerable Michelle Trachtenberg) over her heartbreak, "When you're young everything seems like it's the end of the world, but it's not…" "17 Again" has a certain bitter sweet and affirming resonance. In a light hearted way "17 Again" is about the choices we make in life and how we foster greatness for the ones we love. "17 Again" works, because of the solid Efron and the amazing Leslie Mann as Mike's estranged wife Scarlett.
Mike (Perry) is currently living with his wealthy high school bud Ned (hysterical Thomas Lennon). Ned is the genius, who invented the software that prevents music piracy, and also the guy who made piracy possible. Mike's wife Scarlett (Leslie Mann) has filed for divorce, and he barely knows his two teenage kids Maggie (Trachtenberg) and Alex (Sterling Knight). Mike has a job he hates. After a devastating day at work Mike visits his high school that Maggie and Alex now attend. He expresses his yearning to be 17 again in his glory days to the Janitor (Doyle-Murray). Having ice cream with his kids, he finds out the Maggie got into Georgetown and Alex lies to him about trying out for the basketball team.
There is a wonderful scene as Leslie Mann discards Mike's belongings in a wood chipper. Mike confesses, "I have been so disappointed with my life…" Mann's Scarlett has had to endure this for 18 years of marriage. Mike said he felt obligated. Broken hearted Scarlett concedes, "Don't do me any favors." From here "17 Again" charts a familiar course as Mike becomes the 17 year-old Efron. What keeps it in engaging is Mike's epiphany that his travel back is really about "helping Alex and Maggie". Mike discovers that Alex is a punching boy for bully Stan (jerky Hunter Parrish), who is captain of the basketball team. Stan is also Maggie's boyfriend. Alex is really a great kid with a good 3 point shot, and sweet on head cheerleader Nicole (pretty Josie Lopez). Maggie is the smart and big hearted teen defining herself in the world. Both Knight and Trachtenberg are authentic and very good.
The supporting performances are strong. Thomas Lennon as Ned is hilarious and charmingly nerdy. His Jedi Knight duel with young Mike (Efron) is hysterical. Ned also poses as Mike's Dad. Ultimately this works as he pursues the affections of the stunning and funny Melora Hardin as Principal Masterson. I was dying when Lennon and Hardin were talking in Tolkien Elfish at dinner.
We stick with the movie, because of Efron and Mann, who are compelling and display a goofy and touching chemistry. Efron is good looking and charming. Mann is smart, sexy, and funny. There is a funny sequence as Mann tells Efron that she is not into the whole "cougar" and "Mothers I like to…" deal. Efron has a moment of solace as his Mike sees the beautiful garden Scarlett designed. The two have a lot of fun with an inappropriate tango of sorts. It's this kind of spirit, fun and touching humanity that make "17 Again" so entertaining and worth watching.

Obsessed (2009) Full Movie Divx
This would've been a decent romance affair thriller if it weren't for all the unintentional comedy that happens along the way as the result of a poorly executed film. There are times when you feel like it could have a potential to be worth watching but then something happens that would... just crack you up. Nothing's funnier than a person who takes too seriously and OBSESSION is an example of that. The movie's only exciting part is the girl fight at the end, but even that could use a better choreography.
The writing is weak, some of the dialogue they had the actors say are borderline ridiculous. When it's supposed to be serious, it comes off comical. But it does a good job of building up Ali Larter's character to be this crazy nemesis that audience just hates. She makes your usual stalker seem like a harmless fan. Once again, the movie has the potential to be decent, even the marital arguments between Idris Elba and Beyonce's characters concerning brutal honesty is quite raw for a PG-13 and for a moment there it actually demands your attention but then comes the funny lookin' lingerie in the car, Ali Larter swinging the bat in the attic during the fight and Jerry O'Connell's unbelievably annoying presence.. he should've been removed from the story completely.
Filmmaker Steve Hill should've kept the cameras on close-up pan and just constantly showed intensity that would engage the audience instead of making it feel like we're watching a Tyler Perry movie. But what'd ya expect,.. Hill's directing experiences all these years have been TV gigs.
Whenever I'm asked if Beyonce's a good actress , I always say she's a better singer than she is an actress but I can see she's improving a bit in OBSESSED but you can sense she's still holding back and not immersing herself completely in her character.
It's scary to think that I actually know some women who are much like her character.. when her mind's made up, it's gonna take a long time to change it, because even when you're right, you're still wrong.
Idris Elba whose best performance to date was still his role in the series The Wire, is the man that in the middle of two angry women. The man that's being fought over by two very attractive women. Some guys would find that flattering but then again, some guys don't graduate college.
Ali Larter is the right girl for this job, she's the new Glenn Close of Fatal Attraction. The only thing that hurts Larter's performance is the limit that the movie seems to put on her, otherwise.. if unleashed, I think Larter could do some serious damage and get some major recognition for it.
